When I write, I get naked

When I want to evoke emotions and reactions from my readers, I have a sneaky little trick that I like to pull.

I get naked.
Yes, I do!

I bare all and become vulnerable in my reader's eyes for the amount of time they spend reading what I've written.

At first I'm hesitant to do so. After all, I'm a fairly private person. But I know that in order for my writing to really reach people and touch their hearts, I have to do this.

I have to get to naked.

I've done it a few times, and I got the best responses from them. Some people say I'm brave to do what I do. I guess I am. After all, I voluntarily put myself in the spotlight and under the watchful eye of men and women (around the world) as I strip myself for all to see.

They can see every bruise and scar on me. It's a risk I have to take to get what I want. And up to now, it's worked. Funny thing is, I don't feel dirty after I've done it. I feel empowered. Liberated.

Once I let it all out in the open, I'm a bit nervous what will be said about me. Will they question the authenticity of my nakedness? Some do. The rest thank me for baring all.

So this is what I've learnt about writing. I write about incidents that have happened to me - the good, the bad, the ugly, the painful. I write about my deepest feelings, aspirations and desires. I write about mistakes I've made as well as fears and anxieties that haunt me. I write about things I'm afraid to verbalize - in case they may just come true.

When I do this (without lacing it with other frivolous detail) I suddenly get a whopping response from readers.

A writer should never underestimate their reader's intelligence. Words that are meaningful will pull at people's heartstrings. Reader's will begin to trust you and you will find that you've tapped into an audience that respects you for what you do, what you have to say and how you deliver your message.

All this I've discovered just by getting naked when I write!
Try it...

HA! It's so funny that you'd write this...it's exactly why I named my blog "The Naked Redhead". I'd written other blogs before, but found I wasn't being honest enough with myself or my readers. So I started fresh, with a new, "nude" perspective. Good stuff! :)

Great advice. Thank you! I heard one writer say, I know I'm writing well when I get to the point of tears as I'm writing. (I guess you could replace tears with any emotion that you're trying to convey)

I'll pass your blog along to a couple friends of mine. I know they'll enjoy it too.
