Egypt (17) Pyramids and Sphinx

Sunday, January 24 2010

The drive to the pyramids is short, and Dana is explaining about the history and construction of these majestic monuments. I'm beginning to zone out. I see her lips moving, but she becomes blurry as my eyes start to close behind my dark sunglasses. I need to be outside and walking. If I don't, I'm going to pass out. As if she can read my mind, we get out and walk around taking the beauty of these creations in.

Seeing the pyramids before me is surreal. I have no words to describe how I'm feeling seeing what I've studied at school in front of me. It's still early in the morning, but there are many tourists there are already. My mum and I notice a few stalls with men selling souvenirs. Nearly every second person is selling the same thing and each one is trying to lure us to buy his goods.

I walk past a man who looks me up and down and says to me, "Your body is like Egyptian woman - beautiful!"

"Really?!"

Another woman may take offense to this, but I'm a bit chuffed! I live in a society (Korea) where women with my body type - full figured - are not appreciated or even regarded.

With Dana:

We spend about 10 minutes browsing and we move to our next stop, The Great Sphinx.

By now, my body is feeling heavy. I feel so sluggish and will myself to carry on.

I'm in complete awe when I come face to face with the reclining lion-human head statue. Am I really here? There are many people hustling around, so after taking my photos, we proceed to exit. A boy selling postcards catches my attention, and I buy something from him. I can only liken this experience to when I saw Big Ben or Tower Bridge in London in 2008. I don't know what I'm more in awe of - the size of these monuments or the fact that I'm right there looking at it with my own eyes.

It's one of those things where you have to just be there to understand what I'm talking about!

Egypt (13) Istanbul: Snow Storm

After the Grand Bazaar, we go to a coffee shop where we will wait for the driver to pick us to head to the airport. It's snowing heavily that it's hard to even walk with eyes fully opened.

It was snowing so heavily that we couldn't even open our eyes!

Chocolate-covered coffee beans: addictive!

Coffee Shop

Sitting in the coffee shop, I start to panic a bit. Dilek tells us that there's a possibility flights will be delayed or canceled. Now it's nearly 5pm. My flight is in another 6 hours. My mind starts racing. What if I get stranded at the airport? I'm meant to arrive in Cairo at 2am, go to the hotel to meet my mum and get ready for our tour which will begin at 8am. I already picture my mum's face when I call her to tell her she'd have to start the tour without me. This can't happen. I've flown for over 10 hours. I'm merely 2 hours away from Egypt. Please God, don't let my flight be canceled.

When the driver finally arrives, Diaa assures me that everything will be fine and that we'll take off safely. After an hour, we arrive at the airport. I'm grateful we've arrived safely, but I still won't be at peace until I'm sitting in the aircraft taking off. We have many hours ahead of us, so Diaa and I find a place to sit and pass the time.

Egypt (12) Istanbul: Grand Bazaar

Saturday, January 23 2010

We still have so much time left till we head back to the airport. Diaa and my flight are around the same time - 23:30. We go to the Grand Bazaar which is basically a souk. There's so much to see, and shopkeepers will do their best to lure you into their stores for hot tea and try to sell you their goods.

Many stores offer tea to customers

Met this guy who could speak a bit of Korean!
Also, he dropped the price of a purse from $20 right down to $4!

Egypt (11) Istanbul: Hagia Sophia

Saturday, January 23 2010

After lunch, we go to the Hagia Sophia. Now a museum, it was once an Eastern Orthodox Church and later an Imperial Mosque. It's beautiful inside, and reminded me a lot of St Paul's Cathedral in London. The intricate details in the artwork is simply incredible.

Egypt (10) Istanbul: Lunch

Saturday, January 23 2010

It's time for lunch and as always I opt for the vegetarian option. It was quite tasty. The Turkish coffee was delicious!

Egypt (8) Istanbul: Blue Mosque

Saturday, January 23 2010

Our next stop is the Blue Mosque, or rather The Sultan Ahmed Mosque. It's known as the Blue Mosque for the blue tiles adorning the walls of its interior. It was built between 1609 and 1616 and also has a tomb of the founder.

Visitors need to take their shoes off before entering the mosque. It was very cold, windy and snowing during the time we were there. Also, female visitors are required to cover their head while inside. The Spanish guy was very kind to me and gave me his black beanie to wear.

Egypt (7) Istanbul: Turkish Islamic Art Museum

Saturday, January 23 2010

We begin our tour at the Turkish Islamic Art Museum, which has a collection of Islamic calligraphy, ceramics and prayer rugs from different time periods and regions.

Egypt (6) Istanbul City Tour begins

Saturday, January 23 2010

There are people hovering around the hotel desk. The man who charged my MP3 player a few hours ago sees me and says, "You're still here? I think you want to sleep in the airport!"  There's a short man hustling around organizing the tour. He asks for my boarding pass and says he'll give it back to me in a few minutes. I ask him about the weather, because it's very grey outside and it looks like it's snowing. Also, I'm not wearing anything warm. He assures me it's "not that bad".

After a few minutes, I meet 2 other men who will be doing the tour with me. One is from Syria and the other is from Spain. They've both flown in from Seoul, Korea - on the same flight as me! When we step outside it is freezing! I don't have gloves, a scarf or a jacket on. Diaa, from Syria offers me his long coat. Usually I'd decline, but it was THAT cold that I was more than happy to take it from him. He assures me he has many layers under the suit he has on.

It's just the three of us and we make some small talk before we pick up our guide. Her name is Dilek and I notice that she's not overly friendly. She is, however happy to have a Spanish person in the group as she says she's been studying the language but has no one to practice on.

Day 3: Thursday, December 29 2009

So my new friends from Singapore and I decide to lunch together. First, the driver stops at my hotel to drop off some paperwork or something. I will get off at the next hotel stop to have lunch there. My bag is feeling a bit heavy. I'm carrying my bulky camera with me as well as some things I bought during the day.  While the tour guide is talking to someone in the hotel lobby (I can see him), I ask the driver if I can please go in to leave my shopping in the room. It would take a maximum of two minutes.

I explain to him slowly that I am going to have lunch with the people he'll be dropping off at the next stop. I assure him I'll be back in two minutes flat and practically beg him, "Please don't leave without me." He doesn't say anything, just nods. As I get out the van, I tell him again, "Please don't go. Wait for me!"

I don't walk, but run to the elevator, go to the 4th floor, swipe my card to unlock the door and go into my room. I empty the shopping from my bag on to the bed. I quickly wash my hands and run out again. When I reach the hotel lobby, Mr Song calls me to the desk. From the corner of my eye, I can see the white van waiting for me. Mr Song wants to tell me about the tour the following day. I want to go to Wat Poh to see temples and the famous reclining buddha.  I tell Mr Song that the driver is waiting for me. He goes on to tell me that I CAN'T go on the tour tomorrow because it doesn't operate on New Years Day.

Now I'm irritated. If I knew that, I'd have gone to Wat Poh TODAY. It's one of the main things I HAD to take photos of before leaving Thailand. Why didn't he know this information before?

"You go yourself," he says.
"How?" I ask.
"You go taxi," he suggests.

I have no idea how far Wat Poh his from the city and I'm not sure if I want to 1) spend the money on taxi fare going there and 2) going alone with the taxi.

This conversation with Mr Song lasts for about 1.5 minutes. There's nothing I can do if the tour is not operating and I have no energy to still argue with him. Besides, the driver is parked outside waiting for me along with my hungry Singaporean friends.

I thank Mr Song (JUST to be polite, because that's what I was taught to always do and say) and go outside.

I step out the clear glass doors and look left and right.

Where's the white van that was waiting for me?

There's a white van parked across the street. I walk over and look into the tinted windows. It's empty.

Where's the white van that was waiting for me?

Kabir and Sarah are in that van. We're supposed to have lunch together. My mind flashes back to when we were on the boat and chatting. Kabir said, "We must exchange phone numbers and email addresses so you call us when you visit Singapore."  We said we'd exchange details once we were back on land. We didn't.

I march back into the hotel asking Mr Song where the driver could have gone to.

"He no time. He go," says Mr Song.
"But I asked him to wait for me. I was supposed to have lunch with people in there," I say.
He's not phased. This irritates me further.

"Can you please call the driver and ask where he is?" I ask
"He no phone," he says.

Then the tour guide - a scrawny looking man wearing an orange T-shirt and who I gave 100 Baht to earlier suddenly appears. He's not phased by my story either.

Mr Song asks the tour guide for the list of passengers in the van. He writes down the hotel name and their room number. Room 598.

"You go there," says Mr Song.
I'm not in the mood for rude cheating cab drivers to take me there.
I wonder if the effort is worth it.

I'm about to kick up a fuss when a young man who works at the hotel walks by. Mr Song tells me that the young guy will take me to the area (which apparently is near to my hotel).

I can't believe this. I asked him to wait for me. He just ... drove off ... with my friends.

About two minutes later, the driver pulls into an area that is swarming with people, clothing stalls, tuk tuks and those damn scooters. He points ahead.

"I go there?" I ask.
I guess he's trying to say the hotel is up ahead. I thank him and get out the van. I look around me. I can't see anything that resembles a hotel with the name written on the paper that Mr Song gave me.

As I turn around, I look up to a building that reaches the heavens.  It's Baiyoke Sky Hotel. It's the tallest building in Bangkok. I wanted to stay there, but they were fully booked. I then tried at their sister hotel, Baiyoke Boutique Hotel. When I called them, they asked me to do the booking online. When I emailed them, I got no reply. Again - not impressed with the service in Bangkok.

There are shoppers everywhere. I don't know which direction to walk in. All I see around me are places saying "Thai Massage" or little cafes. I remember that Sarah was dressed in all-red so I thought if I walk around, maybe - just maybe I will spot her.

I have to be very careful because scooters are zooming past me without warning. I'm about to give up. I decide to find a cafe and have lunch. When I met Kabir and Sarah, I thought my holiday was picking up. It was nice to meet them and I was looking forward to lunching with them.  Now, I was back to the same dreadful feeling I had the previous day when the cab driver cheated me. I'd never see them again, because we never got to exchanging our contact details.

In a very dramatic filmy kind of way, I'm walking feeling upset and wanting to go back to Korea. I see a slender woman with long hair tied in a low ponytail walking with a man. She's dressed in all-red. It's Sarah! Is it?

I walk to the pavement and hurry towards them. The look on their face when I reach them turns from irritation to complete surprise. Kabir has his phone in his hand and a small piece of paper in the other.  He tells me he was on the phone with the tour company trying to locate me.  They can't believe I'm standing in front of them.

Sarah tells me how they SAW me in the hotel lobby talking to Mr Song, and the driver started pulling away.

"There she is. She's coming," Sarah relates to me what she was saying to the driver.
"We were so angry with him," Kabir tells me.

To worsen the situation, the driver didn't even drop them off at their hotel. They had to walk over a bridge and Sarah tells me that she shares my fear of traffic and scooters.

I show them the paper that Mr Song gave me with their hotel name and room number.
The room number was WRONG. Why am I not surprised?

"The driver was so rude, we didn't even give him a 100 Baht tip," says Kabir.

"100 Baht? That's a tip?" I ask.

The 100 Baht I gave the scrawny man in the orange T-shirt earlier was no fee at all. Mr Song told me to give him a 100 Baht, which I did. ONLY to realize now that it was a tip. Damn!

We still can't believe that in the buzzing chaos of this area, we actually found each other again. I'm feel so irritated. So cheated. Above all, I'm relieved to have found Kabir and Sarah again. By now, we're hungry and set off to find a place to relax and have a meal together.

Day 3: Thursday, December 31 2009

After the river cruise, we go to Chin Jewelry Factory. Anyone who knows me knows that I love my bling, but...I have no intention of buying anything here and if I can't buy anything I don't really care much to look around. So after a few minutes I become very bored.

I'm walking behind everyone else in the group looking around, but not taking in much. I'm just trying to be patient till we leave the place. One of the guys who works there is walking behind me and asks where I'm from. He's dressed in a suit, has ruggedy hair and is wearing glasses. He's tall and well-built. He's actually cute!

He wants to show me some jewelry in another glass cabinet.
"I don't want to see anything," I tell him.
"Why?" he asks.
"...because I want everything here, and I can't have it," I say.
He chuckles.

He makes some small talk, and I figure he should rather be helping someone else who's going to actually spend money instead of talking to me - a time waster!

...and then it hits me.  Rewind back a few months back when I was in Dubai. I was on a tour and we stopped at a gallery shop. The man who was meant to be showing everyone around, lured me into a private tour and tried his luck charming me. Do you remember Maddy from Kashmir? This feels like a Maddy replay!

I think guys who work in places like this see dozens/hundreds (thousands) of tourists and they're expert at seeing who's traveling alone. People traveling alone obviously stand out more.

I eventually break away from the Jewelry Cutie and strike up a conversation with my new friends from Singapore. We browse around the souvenir part of the store and I can't help but notice that the workers are extremely unfriendly and unhelpful. I ask a question and they reply me very abruptly. Again, I'm not impressed with the service I'm getting in Bangkok.

One of the tour guides asks why I'm alone and then questions further why I don't have a boyfriend. I ask them if I could take their photo. Maybe that would stop their questions.

I say to my tour guide, "The man at the hotel said I should give you 100 Baht".
He agrees, and I give him the money.

Everyone's back in the bus. We're hotel-bound. My two new Singaporean friends and I decide to lunch together. They tell me there are a few Indian restaurants near their hotel. Neither of us have any plans for the rest of the day, and I look forward to a great lunch with interesting people.

Mehndi / Henna

Wednesday, April 29 2009

There was a mehndi / henna artist in the camp. You could have a design applied for free, and you'd have to pay for anything after that. I can't remember this lady's name but she did it so quickly and it came out so good...

Lunch

After the city tour, we headed back to the hotel & Mr Kim & I had lunch together.
There was a selection of hot and cold foods.
We only had about an hour till our next tour (Desert Safari).

Dubai Museum

Wednesday, April 29 2009

We went to the Dubai museum (a bit creepy!)... it depicted life in Dubai over the years.
