Insadong & Yongsan - again!

Thursday, August 19 2010

Yet again, there were a few things we had to go back to Seoul for. We started off in Insadong and headed to Yongsan (this time for the last time!) and got home around 5pm.

Errands and Shopping

Tuesday, August 17 2010

After a trip to the bank and post office, mum, Darmesh and I went to Hyundai Department Store for some last minute shopping. Again, we got home pretty late. By now, I had just 3 nights left in Korea.

Night walk in the park

Monday, August 16 2010

We took the day off to chill at home and relax. Around 8pm, we decided to go out for a walk to a nearby park and maybe do some shopping. The park is called Pigeon Park and I've been there a couple of times. Around 9pm, there were people taking power walks or using the outdoor gym.

After some shopping, we went to Garten Bier (pub) for a snack and an ice cold drink. Home time was around midnight!

Egypt (12) Istanbul: Grand Bazaar

Saturday, January 23 2010

We still have so much time left till we head back to the airport. Diaa and my flight are around the same time - 23:30. We go to the Grand Bazaar which is basically a souk. There's so much to see, and shopkeepers will do their best to lure you into their stores for hot tea and try to sell you their goods.

Many stores offer tea to customers

Met this guy who could speak a bit of Korean!
Also, he dropped the price of a purse from $20 right down to $4!

Day 4: Friday, January 1 2010

Shopping in Siam is endless. There are stores selling designer labels EVERYWHERE! I'm fascinated by the design and decor of the mall, rather than actual shopping. I'm a bit tired and want to rest somewhere. After walking for what seems like forever, I find a small place have a mini pizza and ice cold Fanta.

I'm excited to see the 2010 FIFA World Cup Ball (above). It's always a thrill to see anything South African when abroad! I decide it's time to wrap it up at Siam. It's still mid afternoon, and I figure I'd head over to Silom Road, where I hope to find a good (and clean) spa.

Day 4: Friday, January 1 2010

I walk out of MBK Center not knowing which direction Siam Square is. I know it's far too close to take a cab. I notice a young man sitting on the curb. He looks like a university student. I ask him if he speaks English and am so relieved that he does. He points across the road to where Siam Square is. I have to go over a bridge to get to the other side. I thank him for his help and realize he's probably one of the only people I've met so far who has been kind to me.

I reach the other side and walk towards a big building the guy told where Siam is located. I need to cross the street. ...and then, my eye catches something. Something I fear and have a phobia of. Across the street in a gutter, I see ... a big r-a-t.  Yes, I KNOW they are everywhere, but I don't want to SEE them and I like to imagine that they have their own little world underground somewhere or hide in holes where I can't see them. I freak out a little bit and decide NOT to cross that street. (Ohhh - I'm getting goosebumps even writing about it!) I take a longer route to get to the other side. Don't judge me... it's just me!

Day 4: Friday, January 1 2010

Everyone's told me to go to MBK Center and to visit their Food Court. The place is HUGE! I walk around aimlessly. I go into a few stores, but nothing appeals to me. I'm experiencing the same thing as yesterday. No one acknowledges me or wants to assist when I walk into a store. I pass a bag shop and something very shiny catches my eye. I like it so decide to buy it. When I go to pay for it, the woman doesn't greet me. After paying for it, she stuffs it into a plastic bag and gives it to me. I can't take the attitude of the people here!

I go upstairs to the Food Court. I'm given a card and told that I can use it at any food stall and I'd have to pay the total when I exit.  There are a number of different foods to choose from - Italian, Indian, Japanese...I can't decide what I want to have. Also, I am not keen on ordering something very big. I know I wouldn't finish it on my own.  I walk around taking some photos and looking at the food displays. I also notice that many of the chefs are men. I decide to find a pizza joint somewhere else.

As I exit and give the card to the woman behind the counter, I tell her, "I didn't use it." She just takes it from me without saying anything. "Okay?" I ask her to make sure she heard me. "OKAY!" she says as if she's shouting at me! What. The. Hell?

I can't believe everyone raves about Bangkok. Why am I having such a bad experience with people here? I think it's time to leave MBK Center and head over to Siam Square. I'm really not that much of a shopper anyway. I pass an area that sells every item of clothing - swimwear, jeans, t-shirts... I walk through it just browsing and to kill more time. Again, bad service. I head downstairs.

I pass a Mister Donut and decide to go in for a Cafe Mocha and to take a quick breather. I sit down at a table facing a man rolling dough. I ask him if I can take a photograph. I show him my camera and make an action to take a photo. I tell him I don't want HIS photo, but just a photo of him rolling the dough. He doesn't understand and asks a girl standing nearby. I ask her and she says rudely, "No, no picture!" I'm so over this place now. I finish my Mocha and leave the center.

Good Bye MBK!

Day 3: Thursday, December 31 2009

As I walk into the arcade, there's a stall selling Thai souvenirs. I ask the price for a few items. The woman is not very helpful. I move on and find a store that has my name written all over it. I am mesmerized by the bling hanging everywhere! Up to now, I've not bought anything for myself. I have to buy something here.  I look at the chunky rings. They're so shiny! I have to have one. The price tag has two prices. I don't understand so I ask the lady for help. She whips out a calculator and says something about choosing two more items. I can't understand her. I don't want three things. I want just ONE item.

I ask her the price of something else and she rudely tells me, "Madam, look here." I know she's irritated with me. That makes ME irritated. I find a couple of more things I want and want to get her attention. I stand next to her to ask a question, but she blatantly ignores me. By now, the little store is filling up with people and there's an annoying toddler in a pram trying to get his mothers attention. He tries pulling some of the jewelry off the rack, but his mother doesn't seem to bothered by her brat's behaviour. There are two men standing outside the store waiting for (I presume) their wives or girlfriends. They look bored and I pity them!

There are so many things I want to buy, but the woman is very rude. I buy only two things (not knowing if I'd get it at another place).  I'm very annoyed with the bad service. I can't help but wonder what my mother would have done in this situation. She doesn't take bad service for ANYTHING!

I move to a few more stores. I can't believe the poor service there as well. Either shopkeepers don't acknowledge the customer, or they're rude and abrupt when being asked for help. After browsing around, I think it's time to make a move, but I want to buy coffee first. I stand at the counter waiting to be served. There are NO other customers. There are two workers behind the counter. No one acknowledges me. Am I like, invisible in this city? After I get my order, I hurry outside and head for my hotel.

Today, my planets were anything, but aligned

Image taken from Google Images

As this day draws to a close, I realize how strange it was. I felt completely out of balance all day.

This is my third winter in Korea and I still can't get used to wearing leggings and layers of clothing. It's necessary though, because temperatures drop to below freezing. You only really feel the cold when you're outside, but everywhere else - including buses and subways are heated. Still - it's the kind of cold that nearly numbs you.

I KNOW this, yet I still opted to wear a fairly thin long-sleeve top under my jacket. When I got to work, I couldn't figure out why I didn't wear my grey waistcoat that I usually wear with this particular top.

My classes were just average, but my first class of the day, 5-1 were almost non-responsive. They're usually pretty active, but today was just ... blah...

It was grey outside and I had a feeling it was going to snow. Apparently it snowed a lot in Seoul, and some students told me it snowed a little bit during lunch, but I didn't see it.

I can't find my gloves that I bought last winter, and I figured that if I was going to buy new gloves I'd buy leather ones.I decided to go to Bucheon after school to do some winter shopping.

So not dressing appropriately was my first little blunder of the day. And then...

  • After work I stopped at the ATM and couldn't make up my mind about how much cash I wanted.

  • My bus chip that's attached to my phone snapped off, but it's still useable. I passed a booth where a lady sells these little chips and you can load money (credit) on it to use the bus/subway. There was a pretty orange one that I saw for 5,000 Won. I bought it and loaded 5, 000 Won credit. That's 10,000 spent before I even started my shopping. My co-teacher was with me and told me after I bought it that it was a bit expensive.  On the bus, I remembered that I have another chip at home (brand new). I really regretted buying the new orange one.

  • In Bucheon, I went to the underground shopping mall at the subway station. I knew exactly where I wanted to go to buy what I wanted and needed. First thing - gloves. I didn't get the leather ones I wanted, but I spent 10, 000 Won on a new pair - quite pretty, I thought.

  • Next thing: Leggings / Socks. The poor ajuma (Korean lady) dug around for a new unopened package of leggings, but I decided not to take it. So I chose 3 pairs of knee-high socks. At the last minute, I took another pair. As I dug in my bag for money, I saw the bus chip I'd bought. Would this ajuma maybe buy it from me?! Waaahhaahaa! She looked at me as if to say "yeah right!" Well, it was worth a try!

  • Next stop - buy a scarf. There were a few pretty colours that I saw, and I couldn't decide which one to buy. I settled for a black. Thankful for the man being so patient with me

  • I went upstairs to E-Mart and saw the exact gloves that I wanted. They were 12, 000 Won. I really wanted them, but I'd already bought a pair downstairs. I bought it anyway and figured I'd return the other one.

  • When I went downstairs, the man thought I wanted to exchange it for something, but I said now I wanted to return it. I HATE doing that... but... he did!

  • Then it's time to go home. There are various queues to stand in to catch a bus to my stop. Which one should I stand in? 31-3? 38? I can't make up my mind. I settle for 38.

  • After I arrive at my stop, I decide to try my luck if the lady will take back my bus chip. After all, I already loaded money on it. I speak to her in broken Korean and ask her if she'd take it back from me. She does it with a smile :)  Daaaamn... I'm good!

  • Time to head home. I haven't eaten yet. Should I buy gim-bap (rice/veggies rolled in seaweed)? I can't decide if I'm hungry or not. I leave it and walk home.
  • At home, I notice an un-opened pack of cosmetic powder pads.  And I bought a new pack today - forgetting I already had one.
Even while writing this blog, I battled forming sentences. While writing it, my friend Sarah called to ask if I can go shopping with her tomorrow. Here's hoping tomorrow will be a better, balanced day for me.  I'm wrapping up today and calling it a night. Love x

Durban (6) Gateway

Since I don't enjoy shopping, I also don't care much for malls. But on Friday, August 7 2009 we spent most of the day at Gateway - daayum, that place is HUGE! We did quite a bit of shopping - more than expected, actually. I was very excited 'bout the new books I bought :)

An interesting character I met at the mall :)

With mum while we were taking a breather from all the walking!

Still a kid at heart :)

Durban (5) Musgrave Center

After dinner, we went to Musgrave Center in Berea. Mum & I were window shopping while my brother met a friend for coffee. Check out this bling!

Bomb Scare @ Retail Park, Beacon Bay

I don't enjoy shopping at all. If I need to buy something, I need to know exactly what I need so all I have to do is go in, buy it and get the hell outta there. I especially hate shopping for clothes, but I needed to get a few things for taking back to Korea and for our trip to Durban.

So ... on Wednesday, August 5 2009 my mum and I were at Retail Park in Beacon Bay (East London) when there was a bomb scare. We thought it was only the store we were in, but turned out that the whole center had to be evacuated.

My first thought - Daaayum! I wanna stay & take pics :)
My second thought - If I don't make it outta here, who's gonna pack up my apartment in Korea?!

I know. My imagination runs wild at the best of times. Anyways, mum and I left Retail Park and moved to the next shopping option - Vincent Park! Well, that was the excitement of the day for lil' ol' East London :)

Spending Sincheon Dollars

Throughout the semester, we've rewarded the students with "Dollars" ($1 & $2) when they do well in tests and activities. Last week was the final week of the semester, so we turned the English classroom into a store.

The students are able to spend their "dollars" by "buying" snacks - chips, cookies, candy, stationery - even travel catalogs!

After our 6th grade classes on Monday, a lot of the snacks were finished, so we had to raise the 'prices' - making a small packet of chips $20! It was fun, cause just for a minute we announced a "sale" where everything was going to be just $2 - but they HAD to speak in English.

After their "shopping" they could watch a movie - I-Robot :)

My co-teacher & I stayed an extra 2 hours on the Friday after work setting up the classroom~

Shopping Roleplay

We've started a new system in our English class. When the students do well in class or tests, we award them with "Dollars" (Sincheon Dollars) - Either $1 or $2. So, we had a shopping role play activity where they could "buy" snacks or stationery from our Restaurant and Market Zone.

But they had to memorize a dialogue:

Customer: Excuse me?
Shopkeeper: May I help you?
Customer: Yes please, how much is this cookie?
Shopkeeper: It's $2.
Customer: OK, I'll take it...here you are (hand them the money)
Shopkeeper: Here's your change - thank you!

They had a great deal of fun, but... imagine having to say this dialogue OVER and OVER again. My head was sssssspinning !!!!!
