Day 3: Thursday, December 31 2009

We decide to go to Swagath Indian Restaurant. It seems clean and decent. We order so many dishes. Samoosas, chicken curry, chicken tikka, pakoda.... I stuck to veg options and just ordered paneer & naan.

To be honest, I've had better Indian food, but I'm enjoying the company. I admire Sarah's beaded bracelet and without hesitation she takes it off her wrist and gives it to me. I don't accept gifts very well, but she insists.

The conversation varies from history to each other's country to travel to movies. As time passes, we become tired. Sarah is very sleepy, and wants to go back to the hotel. I'm enjoying the music they're playing in the restaurant and I jokingly as our waiter if he'll give me the CD. He thinks I'm serious and looks at me like I'm crazy. He tells another guy who comes over and says if I come back in 2 days, he'll have it copied for me. Of course, I'm just kidding... and we leave Swagath.

Day 3: Thursday, December 29 2009

So my new friends from Singapore and I decide to lunch together. First, the driver stops at my hotel to drop off some paperwork or something. I will get off at the next hotel stop to have lunch there. My bag is feeling a bit heavy. I'm carrying my bulky camera with me as well as some things I bought during the day.  While the tour guide is talking to someone in the hotel lobby (I can see him), I ask the driver if I can please go in to leave my shopping in the room. It would take a maximum of two minutes.

I explain to him slowly that I am going to have lunch with the people he'll be dropping off at the next stop. I assure him I'll be back in two minutes flat and practically beg him, "Please don't leave without me." He doesn't say anything, just nods. As I get out the van, I tell him again, "Please don't go. Wait for me!"

I don't walk, but run to the elevator, go to the 4th floor, swipe my card to unlock the door and go into my room. I empty the shopping from my bag on to the bed. I quickly wash my hands and run out again. When I reach the hotel lobby, Mr Song calls me to the desk. From the corner of my eye, I can see the white van waiting for me. Mr Song wants to tell me about the tour the following day. I want to go to Wat Poh to see temples and the famous reclining buddha.  I tell Mr Song that the driver is waiting for me. He goes on to tell me that I CAN'T go on the tour tomorrow because it doesn't operate on New Years Day.

Now I'm irritated. If I knew that, I'd have gone to Wat Poh TODAY. It's one of the main things I HAD to take photos of before leaving Thailand. Why didn't he know this information before?

"You go yourself," he says.
"How?" I ask.
"You go taxi," he suggests.

I have no idea how far Wat Poh his from the city and I'm not sure if I want to 1) spend the money on taxi fare going there and 2) going alone with the taxi.

This conversation with Mr Song lasts for about 1.5 minutes. There's nothing I can do if the tour is not operating and I have no energy to still argue with him. Besides, the driver is parked outside waiting for me along with my hungry Singaporean friends.

I thank Mr Song (JUST to be polite, because that's what I was taught to always do and say) and go outside.

I step out the clear glass doors and look left and right.

Where's the white van that was waiting for me?

There's a white van parked across the street. I walk over and look into the tinted windows. It's empty.

Where's the white van that was waiting for me?

Kabir and Sarah are in that van. We're supposed to have lunch together. My mind flashes back to when we were on the boat and chatting. Kabir said, "We must exchange phone numbers and email addresses so you call us when you visit Singapore."  We said we'd exchange details once we were back on land. We didn't.

I march back into the hotel asking Mr Song where the driver could have gone to.

"He no time. He go," says Mr Song.
"But I asked him to wait for me. I was supposed to have lunch with people in there," I say.
He's not phased. This irritates me further.

"Can you please call the driver and ask where he is?" I ask
"He no phone," he says.

Then the tour guide - a scrawny looking man wearing an orange T-shirt and who I gave 100 Baht to earlier suddenly appears. He's not phased by my story either.

Mr Song asks the tour guide for the list of passengers in the van. He writes down the hotel name and their room number. Room 598.

"You go there," says Mr Song.
I'm not in the mood for rude cheating cab drivers to take me there.
I wonder if the effort is worth it.

I'm about to kick up a fuss when a young man who works at the hotel walks by. Mr Song tells me that the young guy will take me to the area (which apparently is near to my hotel).

I can't believe this. I asked him to wait for me. He just ... drove off ... with my friends.

About two minutes later, the driver pulls into an area that is swarming with people, clothing stalls, tuk tuks and those damn scooters. He points ahead.

"I go there?" I ask.
I guess he's trying to say the hotel is up ahead. I thank him and get out the van. I look around me. I can't see anything that resembles a hotel with the name written on the paper that Mr Song gave me.

As I turn around, I look up to a building that reaches the heavens.  It's Baiyoke Sky Hotel. It's the tallest building in Bangkok. I wanted to stay there, but they were fully booked. I then tried at their sister hotel, Baiyoke Boutique Hotel. When I called them, they asked me to do the booking online. When I emailed them, I got no reply. Again - not impressed with the service in Bangkok.

There are shoppers everywhere. I don't know which direction to walk in. All I see around me are places saying "Thai Massage" or little cafes. I remember that Sarah was dressed in all-red so I thought if I walk around, maybe - just maybe I will spot her.

I have to be very careful because scooters are zooming past me without warning. I'm about to give up. I decide to find a cafe and have lunch. When I met Kabir and Sarah, I thought my holiday was picking up. It was nice to meet them and I was looking forward to lunching with them.  Now, I was back to the same dreadful feeling I had the previous day when the cab driver cheated me. I'd never see them again, because we never got to exchanging our contact details.

In a very dramatic filmy kind of way, I'm walking feeling upset and wanting to go back to Korea. I see a slender woman with long hair tied in a low ponytail walking with a man. She's dressed in all-red. It's Sarah! Is it?

I walk to the pavement and hurry towards them. The look on their face when I reach them turns from irritation to complete surprise. Kabir has his phone in his hand and a small piece of paper in the other.  He tells me he was on the phone with the tour company trying to locate me.  They can't believe I'm standing in front of them.

Sarah tells me how they SAW me in the hotel lobby talking to Mr Song, and the driver started pulling away.

"There she is. She's coming," Sarah relates to me what she was saying to the driver.
"We were so angry with him," Kabir tells me.

To worsen the situation, the driver didn't even drop them off at their hotel. They had to walk over a bridge and Sarah tells me that she shares my fear of traffic and scooters.

I show them the paper that Mr Song gave me with their hotel name and room number.
The room number was WRONG. Why am I not surprised?

"The driver was so rude, we didn't even give him a 100 Baht tip," says Kabir.

"100 Baht? That's a tip?" I ask.

The 100 Baht I gave the scrawny man in the orange T-shirt earlier was no fee at all. Mr Song told me to give him a 100 Baht, which I did. ONLY to realize now that it was a tip. Damn!

We still can't believe that in the buzzing chaos of this area, we actually found each other again. I'm feel so irritated. So cheated. Above all, I'm relieved to have found Kabir and Sarah again. By now, we're hungry and set off to find a place to relax and have a meal together.

Day 3: Thursday, December 31 2009

After the river cruise, we go to Chin Jewelry Factory. Anyone who knows me knows that I love my bling, but...I have no intention of buying anything here and if I can't buy anything I don't really care much to look around. So after a few minutes I become very bored.

I'm walking behind everyone else in the group looking around, but not taking in much. I'm just trying to be patient till we leave the place. One of the guys who works there is walking behind me and asks where I'm from. He's dressed in a suit, has ruggedy hair and is wearing glasses. He's tall and well-built. He's actually cute!

He wants to show me some jewelry in another glass cabinet.
"I don't want to see anything," I tell him.
"Why?" he asks.
"...because I want everything here, and I can't have it," I say.
He chuckles.

He makes some small talk, and I figure he should rather be helping someone else who's going to actually spend money instead of talking to me - a time waster!

...and then it hits me.  Rewind back a few months back when I was in Dubai. I was on a tour and we stopped at a gallery shop. The man who was meant to be showing everyone around, lured me into a private tour and tried his luck charming me. Do you remember Maddy from Kashmir? This feels like a Maddy replay!

I think guys who work in places like this see dozens/hundreds (thousands) of tourists and they're expert at seeing who's traveling alone. People traveling alone obviously stand out more.

I eventually break away from the Jewelry Cutie and strike up a conversation with my new friends from Singapore. We browse around the souvenir part of the store and I can't help but notice that the workers are extremely unfriendly and unhelpful. I ask a question and they reply me very abruptly. Again, I'm not impressed with the service I'm getting in Bangkok.

One of the tour guides asks why I'm alone and then questions further why I don't have a boyfriend. I ask them if I could take their photo. Maybe that would stop their questions.

I say to my tour guide, "The man at the hotel said I should give you 100 Baht".
He agrees, and I give him the money.

Everyone's back in the bus. We're hotel-bound. My two new Singaporean friends and I decide to lunch together. They tell me there are a few Indian restaurants near their hotel. Neither of us have any plans for the rest of the day, and I look forward to a great lunch with interesting people.

We stop at a temple. Sarah and I are nervous again about getting out the boat and how we will get back in again. After we are safe on land, we looked around. The temple is breathtaking with its intricate detail.

There is stiff competition amongst people selling their goods. One woman begs me (gripping my arm) to buy something from her. I buy 2 magnets. She still tugs at my arm saying that she'll give me something else because it's "Happy New Year". I tell her I need to walk around a bit and will come back to her.

Around the corner, I see the exact magnet that I actually wanted to buy. I buy it. I go back to the lady I bought the two from and ask her if I can please exchange the 2 magnets for a buddha (same price).  She turns her face away from me and refuses to acknowledge me. I can't believe this! She rattles on something to me acting very stubborn. I don't want my money back. I simply want to exchange what I bought. She doesn't budge, so I leave her. I'm very irritated and want to get back on the boat and back to mainland quickly.

Day 3: Thursday, December 31 2009

I was down in the hotel lobby at 07:20 sharp. The driver first went to another hotel to pick up a couple from Singapore. They were Chinese, and didn't speak any English. At the next stop, we picked up a man and a woman - Indian from Singapore. We actually had no idea where we were going or what was going to happen, but we all just followed the tour guide.

I also noticed that I was the only "single" person.
There were two couples + the tour guide
(although the two people from Singapore weren't a couple)

Sarah (from Singapore) and I were nervous to get onto this boat.
The water was a bit rough. Thanks to some guys who helped us, we got on safely!
This was the guide on the boat - with a VERY unique laughter!

Men rowed right up to the boat to sell souvenirs to tourists.
I bought this:

This young man was selling garlands.
...and bread to feed the fish.

The fish were a bit vicious - kinda like the cab drivers!

Day 2: Wednesday, December 30 2009

A man called Mr Song, who seemed to be one of the "managers" at the hotel (I don't think he was) told me in the morning that we would discuss tour options for me when I got back later that afternoon. His colleague who checked me in the previous night was really kind. I liked him. He told me that his friend, Mr Song would help me out.

I didn't get the same vibe from Mr Song as I did with his friend. There was something about him that wasn't sitting very well with me. I figured perhaps I was just in an irritable mood so I let it pass.

I walk into the hotel and he approaches me. We sit down on the couch in the lobby and I tell him about how I was just cheated by a cab driver. He thinks I'm very upset, because he goes into the restaurant area and comes back with a glass of water for me. He'ss being really nice and I feel I was wrong to misjudge him so quickly.

He shows me a file of tour options I can go on. There is a City & Temple Tour (where I can see the reclining buddha), Floating Market Tour, or a ride down Chao Phraya River that also stops at a temple. I want to go on a group tour and I'm not keen on being the only person with a tour guide.

"Tomorrow my free day. I take you temple tour."
What?
"You'll take me? How much?"
"Nothing."
Yeah right. For real?

"What time?" I asked.

Is this guy serious? On his day off on New Years eve, he is offering to drive me to see famous temples for absolutely no charge?

"09:00," he says.

I sit flipping through the file again. I don't want to commit myself to this, and I don't know why he is willing to take me on his free day. Maybe he is just kind and my mind is just polluted by everyone cautioning me before I left.

He goes to the desk and comes back with a small map of the area.
"Here is hotel," he says pointing with a red pen.
He goes on, "...you walk here, and meet me here," as he draws a circle.

Hang on. Why do I have to meet him in front of  particular building around the corner from the hotel? OK - he doesn't want others to see him? The alarm goes off in my head. This is all too suspicious. I'm not going to stand on a corner and wait for him to pick me up and drive me somewhere for no charge. Hell to the no.

"You know what.... thank you, but it's your day off. I'd rather join this tour (pointing to the Chao Phraya River photos) and then I'll go to Wat Poh on Friday, OK?" I say.

He shrugs his shoulders and makes a call. He says everything is set and I have to be downstairs in the lobby at 07:30 the next morning.

Part of the package I had with the hotel was a free tour if I stayed there for four nights. Initially I was booked for four nights, but then it changed to three. Mr Song said I could still qualify for the free tour, but then he said "Just give driver 100 Baht". I thought that was just a fee I had to pay. OK, fine.

I go up to my room very relieved that I declined his offer of a "free private tour". I go online and share my days events with online friends. Suddenly, I get a wave of replies from friends warning me about Bangkok cab drivers.

One friend, Ken sends me a private message saying, "Sheetal, be very careful of the cab drivers". I have to take heed immediately. Other friends tell me that if drivers refuse to use their meter, I should get out and try another cab.  I didn't know that they were so notorious.

I stay in for the night, watching TV and writing on my netbook. I'd have loved to be outside, but I'm a bit afraid to be out alone. Such a difference compared to my Singapore trip the previous year when I was out alone till the wee hours of the morning. I hope things will pick up the following day on my tour.
