My favourite restaurant, Hurk-Kwa-Saram-Dur

This is my *favourite* restaurant, Hurk-Kwa-Saram-Dur. It means "People of the Earth". It's about a 2 minute drive from my apartment in Eun-haeng-dong. Their best dish is called Bo-Ri-Bap (barley with a mixture of vegetables & hot sauce).

The entrance

The decor is very authentic & natural

We usually order kamja-jon (potato pancake)

You get a bowl of barley (which is bland)

Add a bit of each of these mountain veggies

Add a bit of these other side dishes (acorn jelly etc...)

Add a bit of gochu-jang (hot sauce) & mix it up well!

A side dish (soy bean / tofu)

Dwen-jang-ji-ge (one of my faves) This is a tofu & pumpkin soup

There can be up to 20 side dishes included in a Korean meal!

Sexy & smooth at Once in a Blue Moon

I love getting dressed up for a night out, and last night I did just that. A few of us went to Once in a Blue Moon - a really classy jazz venue in Apgujeong. There is a pretty strict dresscode - they won't allow you in with your torn jeans and runners. From the moment you enter the door, you leave the hustle and bustle of traffic and Apgujeong brand name shoppers outside.

Once in a Blue Moon is dark and lit by blue neon lights. (camera flashes are not permitted) The walls are black and display photos of jazz musicians and other art pieces. The tables are covered with white linen tablecloths with blue candles as the centerpiece.

If you're looking for beer and soju, you'd better go elsewhere, because Once in a Blue Moon is exclusively a wine, cocktail and champagne kind of place. They also serve gourmet European-style dinners, but be warned - while the portions are dainty, the price tags are quite enormous! (expect to pay 14,000 Won for a sip of Baileys on the rocks) Cocktails are named after famous jazz musicians - the Louis Armstrong is particularly good!

I'm told that this venue is a popular celeb hangout and is often used as a location for films and Korean soapies...usually the choice of venue for romantic dates.

Once in a Blue Moon features live jazz sets every night from two different bands. Music starts around 7pm till 10 or 11pm.

For the love of veggies

One of the challenges I face in S.Korea is being a vegetarian. As one would imagine, my choices are limited when I eat out. But my friend introduced me to this awesome veg buffet in Gangnam - at the top of Lotte Department Store. Food was delicious ^^*

Congrats, Smokey Swallows!

SMOKEY SWALLOWS, my family's favourite restaurant in Devereaux Avenue (Vincent, East London) has been rated among the top 100 restaurants in South Africa and is the only Eastern Cape restaurant on the list. (from DD)

Smokey Swallows is usually the choice we opt for when we go out for dinner (with the family). It was also the venue for my birthday dinner last year. The food is exquisite, atmosphere is relaxing (with occasional live jazz performances) and the hospitality - always very warm!
Congrats, Mr & Mrs Poole!
